Lessons for 2025: Always Be Yourself... Unless You Can Be Ironman!

You probably came across the famous meme "Always be yourself, unless you can be Batman". Well, I am a Marvel fan, and my wife actually calls me Ironman. But no, it's not because I have built a high-tech suit or cultivated a billionaire's swagger (I wish), but because this carefully chosen title made me believe that I have mastered something equally impactful – the art of transforming wrinkled chaos into crisp perfection through the intricate skill of ironing (clothes). Well-played Alice Woodruff.

My journey to becoming "Ironman" began years ago though, during my military service, where I learned that starting each day in your best form wasn't just a requirement—it was a way of life. From having a clean shaved face, polished boots and immaculately pressed uniforms to performing the perfect burpee, the military instilled in me a deep appreciation for attention to detail, which worked well with my mild neurodivergence, helping me find order in chaos. This mindset was nurtured and transformed into an equally demanding yet slightly more benign approach (and no it is not because of my age) of becoming the go-to person for ironing at home. Indeed, ironing is an intricate art, whether it's conquering a stubborn crease on a shirt sleeve or mastering the delicate folds of a dress, each garment presents its own unique challenge that required careful analysis and finetuning. To me, ironing has become more than just an ad-hoc task – it's a ritual, a moment of clarity in the everyday messiness of life. There's something meditative about the steady rhythm of the iron, the satisfaction of watching wrinkles disappear, and the pride in a job well done.

As I reflect on 2024, I am going to confirm my bias in seeing parallels between this year's journey and Tony Stark's. Just as Stark faced his defining moment in that cave with shrapnel threatening his heart, this year presented its own crucible moments that tested my core. Each challenge became kind of a "cave moment", a crucible where innovation and resilience were the only strategy cards left to play. Like Stark confronting the limitations of his first crude armor, I found myself pushing against the boundaries of my comfort zone, iterating and pivoting, and emerging, hopefully, stronger with each attempt. My last professional landscape often felt as a barren and resourceless terrain, as the Afghan desert, but like Tony, I learned that our greatest innovations come when we're stripped of our usual resources and forced to think differently.

A Segue to AI (because in 2024 you have to)

And just as Tony Stark had JARVIS (his trusted AI assistant) I've assembled my own team of digital allies. My personal "Avengers" consist of a team of relatively costly agents who are on their probation periods, because budget cuts require some restructuring strategies. Meet o1 Pro, adept in everyday strategic and data analysis, Claude Sonnet who is slightly shy but skilled at deep thinking and writing, Gemini an AI intern with the most potential and a trusted executive assistant, Midjourney, the digital designer who sometimes has their own mind but always produces stunning results, and ElevenLabs an audio producer (verging on sketchy) giving any voice to ideas. And when the mission demands it, I occasionally outsource to backup heroes like Adobe Firefly and Runway ML. Then there are the experimental agent builders like Cursor, Replit and Lovable, who are still figuring out their callings. And of course, the wacky yet surprisingly reliable Grok.

Like the original Avengers, each AI superhero brings their own unique superpower to the table with me as the CEO getting them to all play nice together. This digital ensemble has become an extension of my toolkit, enabling me to address issues (including parts of this article) that would be time-consuming alone – proving that even modern-day heroes need a reliable support system.

Heading into 2025

Like Tony Stark, I strive to put to practice that no superhero saves the universe alone – hence the Avengers! This year's biggest wins for me came through bridge building and collaboration, whether working with colleagues, partners, or mentors. And of course, the small victories – because every freshly pressed shirt is a reminder that attention to detail matters. Sometimes, it's these little things that set the stage for larger accomplishments.

As we move forward into 2025, I'm carrying these Ironman principles with me. Whether I'm pressing clothes or pressing forward with professional goals, I'm reminded that every hero's journey starts with a decision to be of service to their circles, to excel at whatever task is before them, and to keep innovating even when the path isn't clear.

And hey, if all else fails, pick up an iron. You might just save a shirt, a day, or maybe even your universe. ??

All the best
